UK music trade magazine Music Week writes in "Halt the plastic avalanche" that the indie sector alone pumped over 1,686 tonnes of greenhouse gases into the ozone in the manfucturing and transport of 2.6 million promo-CDs according to a study. The same study estimates that a switch to purely digital promos could result in a near total reduction of C02. The article also notes that not only environmental concerns are addressed by digital distribution but also concerns over piracy. Indie label association spokesman Tony Wadsworth is quoted saying: "Piracy tends to start as soon as a disc is pressed ... You can potentially keep digital in a secure format for much longer".
